Is God Done with Me if I've failed Him?

Pastor Sam Sutter - 2/27/2023

When you feel like a failure, you run the risk of becoming one. Guilt, shame, and a sense of inadequacy can paralyze you from becoming what God has called you to. Today we’re telling the famous story of Peter and learning what Jesus can do with someone who feels like a failure, and if you can see how Jesus treats people like us, it can help you see who you really are as a son or daughter of GOD, and you can walk with confidence in God’s calling on your life.

Jesus and Failures: The Story of Peter

John 1:41–42 (NIV) 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus.  Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).

Matthew 16:18 (NIV) 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,  and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

Matthew 4:19 (ESV) 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Luke 4:38–39 (NIV)  38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.

Luke 5:6–9 (NIV) When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken.

Matthew 14:29 (NIV) 29 “Come,” he said.  Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.

Matthew 17:1–4 (NIV)  After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.  Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

John 6:66–69 (NIV) 66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.  67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.  68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”

Luke 22:31–34 (NIV) 31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”  33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”  34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.

Luke 22:55–62 (NIV) 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”  57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said. 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”   “Man, I am not!” Peter replied. 59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”  60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Mark 16:6–7 (NIV) “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’ ”
