Faith Promise Update - Sept 2022

Faith Promise Partners September 2022 Update

Christy & Zach Yoder (Wycliffe – Nigeria, W. Africa)

  • Thank God (these are in response to prayer points from last month...except the last point)
    • As we shared above, for peace and contentment when we can't do all that we want to do, and direction to know what we are supposed to be pouring ourselves into—and what we are not.
    • For unity on the director team as we have been pondering the decision regarding what new language communities to engage with and how—a very faith stretching topic!
    • For Daso's enthusiasm as she starts 10th grade in homeschool online this year.  She has worked long hours this first week as she grows used to the system.
    • For Mariama (grade 2), Lydia (Kindergarden), Olivia and Acacia (preschool), and Christy enjoying their time together
    • For how the teachers in the Orange Hat (library/summer school) have been reliable and self-sustaining as Christy starts school with the girls.
    • For good recovery after most of our family got pretty sick for a few days with COVD-19 and maybe some with malaria, too.  Each moment of life feels so precious after you have been stuck in bed for a couple of days!
  • Please pray:
    • For us to trust God that his dreams are bigger and better than ours.
    • For wisdom and unity as we prepare for a day of strategy meetings in October.  Zach wants to finish his responsibilities of preparations in September.  Facing challenging tensions such as serving more languages (about 200 that still need translation not started yet!), but still trying to serve with great quality.
    • For continued direction on the languages that God wants our organization to partner with as they begin language development and Bible Translation.
    • For travel plans going to the United States in November, Zach to Kenya before joining us in December.
    • For Daso as she is figuring out how to manage the systems and load of online school.
    • For Daso's Visa appointment on October 28th so she can join us in the US for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
    • For the many needs people have around us and how God wants us to respond to those needs. (School fees, food, jobs, etc.)
    • For dear single adult friends who want to study but are limited, for various reasons, in their possibilities. Asking God, what is our role there?
    • For the Orange Hat to continue to be a place of growth for the next month and direction for what happens after that.
    • For responsible adults to manage the teen room that Christy has set up for young people in the community at the same location as the Orange Hat.

Jan VanStaalduinen (Wycliffe – Dallas, TX)

  • I want to thank you for your prayers, cards and notes of encouragement during my mom’s decline and after she went to be with the Lord on June 12. I do miss her but I am grateful for the 11 months that I was able to see her almost every day and help care for her. In spite of her dementia, she was always cheerful, smiling and appreciative. We shared many special times together and quite a few laughs.
  • Some of you have asked and others may be wondering what my plans are now. When I made the decision to move to North Carolina, my plan was to stay here and help care for my parents as long as needed. My dad, who will be 90 in October, is able to live at home independently, but his doctor recommends that he have some help around the house. Based on the doctor’s recommendation, I have reapplied and been approved to continue the Intermittent Medical Leave with Wycliffe. This will allow me to continue working as well as take time to help my dad. Since my dad requires less help, the majority of my time will be devoted to work.
  • I continue to attend Literacy and Education planning meetings and work on different editing tasks. I’m currently editing an early childhood curriculum developed for the Kwaio language group in the Solomon Islands. In the past two months, I’ve been given new responsibilities. I am providing technical assistance for an online Multilingual Education training course. I don’t consider myself very tech savvy, but I have learned how to use different online teaching tools and so far, the course is going well. The course is for language groups in the Asia-Pacific area, and participants come from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Solomon Islands, Thailand and Vanuatu. The course started on July 28 and will run for 10 weeks. I am also working with different colleagues in Asia-Pacific as they develop curriculum and plan in-person and online teacher training courses. I’m enjoying these new responsibilities as it gets me more involved in the field of education, which is a good fit for my skills and interests.
  • Thank you for your prayers, encouragement and gifts. I am grateful for you and your partnership in this ministry.
